The four young men of the BRUCKNER QUARTET got to know each other during their studies in The Netherlands, where they were part of the famous trombone class of Jörgen van Rijen, Pierre Volders, Remko de Jager, and Ben van Dijk. They grew up playing together day in day out, before their individual careers took them to different places. Now they have found each other again to do what they love most: making music together.

Between the four of them, they have played with almost all of the leading ensembles and orchestras in Europe, such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the New Trombone Collective, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, and the Bavarian Radio Orchestra. They won many individual prizes and awards, and, in different formations, at one point they all won the Quartet Competition of the International Trombone Association.

Their passion for music and trombone playing has become a mission: exposing the world to the beautiful sounds of the trombone and surprising their audiences with the versatility of their, relatively unknown, instrument. The magnificence of the sound of trombones playing together is something that was acknowledged by composers very early on, and it is still a pleasure to behold. As such, the repertoire of the BRUCKNER QUARTET ranges from the Renaissance to the present day, and their innovative programmes effortlessly link these together. The ensemble is named after the composer who arguably knew best how to write for trombones in a way that makes them blend and roar: Anton Bruckner. The quartet’s ability to sing, along with their creativity and individual virtuosity, makes for a remarkable ensemble that promises to dazzle with every performance.

A Bruckner a month

Every 1st of the month we’ll post a video of us playing a piece by Anton Bruckner. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

The second piece in our series is Christus factus est (WAB 11). Bruckner composed this motet, which uses the gradual of Maundy Thursday, in 1884 and is originally set for mixed choir a capella. By means of modulation and chromatic, Bruckner achieves heightened expressiveness for the Passion text, influenced by Wagner's music and the Grail motif from Wagner's Parcifal in particular.

We’re starting the new year off with a bang by launching our new video series ‘A BRUCKNER A MONTH’. Every 1st of the month we’ll post a video of us playing a piece by Anton Bruckner. We hope you’ll enjoy it! The first piece in our series is Trösterin Musik (WAB 88), which Bruckner originally wrote in 1877 for male choir and organ to the text of Heinrich von der Mattig's Nachruf. However, the piece is better known in its 1886 version, for which August Seuffert wrote a new text:"Music! You lovely creation,Full of high power and sweet mildness,We feel double deep your motion,When sorrow has split our hearts..." This text suits our current situation perfectly: in difficult times, music has the power to bring us consolation. Let's hope for a wonderful new year, with lots of (live) music!

In the former subtropical swimming paradise, Tropicana, metaphorically speaking being a graveyard of what once was a place full of life and joy, we found a very special place to make a video of the third piece in our series: Am Grabe (WAB 2). Bruckner wrote this elegy in 1861 and it is originally set for male choir a capella. The piece was dedicated to and performed on the funeral of Josephine Hafferl. We hope you’ll enjoy it!

The Hail Mary, Ave Maria in Latin, has been set to music numerous times by many famous composers. Anton Bruckner wrote three different settings, the best known being a motet for seven voices. The version we played for the 4th video in our series (WAB 7), is the least known. In the summer of 1881 Bruckner met Luise Hochleitner, a singer with a beautiful alto voice. He promised to dedicate an Ave Maria to her. The work, which was composed almost 20 years after his more famous motet, is originally written for alto solo voice and keyboard (organ, piano or harmonium).
